Biography Overview
Early Life and Education
Bill Bruford was born on May 17, 1949, in Sevenoaks, Kent, England. Growing up in a musically inclined family, he developed an interest in music at a young age.
Bruford started playing drums while attending Tonbridge School, where he formed his first band.
After watching American jazz drummers on the BBC2 show Jazz 625 when he was 13, Bruford chose to start playing the drums. He practiced in the attic of his house. Later, he took a few lessons from Royal Philharmonic Orchestra member Lou Pocock.
He later pursued higher education at the University of Leeds, where he studied economics but eventually focused his career on music.
Career and Awards
His career, like his drumming sound, is inimitable. Known for his ringing metal snare drum, crisp cymbal work, and knack for complex time, Bruford has left an indelible mark on the music industry.
He was a part of Yes until 1972, after which he spent the rest of the 70s recording and touring with King Crimson, Roy Harper, and U.K., and touring with Genesis.
In 1978, he formed his own group, Bruford, which was active until 1980.
Bruford’s musical journey took a turn when he left the rock genre altogether, turning instead to jazz. The repetition in rock n’ roll was what drove him away from it. He also left King Crimson due to his frustration with rehearsals, which he felt came to nothing.
Despite these challenges, Bruford continued to evolve and innovate in his musical pursuits. He formed his electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986 and played with his former Yes bandmates in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, which eventually led to a very brief second stint in Yes.
In terms of accolades, Bruford has received several prestigious awards throughout his career. After four and a half years of study, he received a PhD in Music from the University of Surrey in 2016.
That same year, he ranked No. 16 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes.
Bruford’s career has not only been confined to performing music. He has also ventured into writing, capping his accomplishments with a new book, Bill Bruford: The Autobiography, published by Jawbone Press in 2010.
His thesis, Making it Work: Creative Music Performance and the Western Kit Drummer, was posted online in May 2016.
He has since written various journal articles, book chapters, and liner notes, and presented guest lectures at universities and music institutions in Europe and North America.
Despite retiring from performing, Bruford continues to contribute to the music industry. In 2022, he launched his own YouTube channel to share videos from his career with additional thoughts and anecdotes. A 6-CD career-spanning box set of tracks on which Bruford played was released on April 29, 2022.
Personal Life
Bill Bruford is married to Caroline Bruford, and they have three children together. Despite his fame and success, Bruford has maintained a relatively private personal life. He continues to be involved in the music through collaborations and occasional performances.
